The coexistance of good and evil and social inequality, these are two of the many themes the book explores, but i feel like these are the most important themes. The book revolves a lot around the moral nature of the people in Maycomb.
I was thinking about how lucky we are that our society has become more equal, theres still a lot of racism in the world but I think its definitely become a more peaceful world in which majority of the people get along and every race stands a fair chance (at least in most countries). For example, if you were black man or woman up against a white man or woman back in the 1930's, your word meant nothing and you were sure to loose nomatter if you were right or wrong. The colour of skin meant everything back in those times. People of colour were concidered scum and were often either slaves or had a job that didnt pay very well. Tom Robinson is the main example of racism in the book. Tom is an african american man whom is married, he was only helping mayella because he felt sorry for her, when she tried to take advantage of him, he refused and then Mr Ewwell accuses Tom of abusing and raping his daughter, when really Mr Ewell is the problem. In the court all the evidence proves that Tom is not guilty. Nomatter hoe hard Atticus tried, Tom still got chared gulity for crimes that he did'nt commit. The trial was not fair, Atticus only managed to make the jury think about the decision for a longer peiod of time.
Meanwhile all of this is going on, Scout and Jem are growing up, this is another theme in the book. The whole town disapproves of Atticus which is a lot for six and ten year old kids to deal with. Scout also has to deal with starting school and just having to try to keep out of trouble.
I feel that resilience has a major part in the book, the Finches learn how to have empathy and stick together and make the best out of a bad situation, they learn things about eachother that they didnt know and most importantly how to become stronger as a family.
Another theme is poverty, the book is based in a time in which countries were going through 'The Great Depression' which was when the stock market crashed, the population got fired from their jobs because employers had no money to pay their workers, people had no money or food. "Atticus said professional people were poor because the farmers were poor. As Maycomb County was farm country, nickels and dimes were hard to come by for doctors and dentists and lawyers. Entailment was only a part of Mr. Cunningham's vexations. The acres not entailed were mortgaged to the hilt, and the little cash he made went to interest. If he held his mouth right, Mr. Cunningham could get a WPA job, but his land would go to ruin if he left it, and he was willing to go hungry to keep his land and vote as he pleased. 'Mr. Cunningham', said Atticus, 'came from a set breed of men'. As the Cunningham's had no money to pay a lawyer, they simply paid us with what they had. 'Did you know', said Atticus, 'that Dr. Reynolds works the same way? He charges some folks a bushel of potatoes for delivery of a baby'."
